(1) Nicknames are two words used by Signals for the purpose of activating five communication drills. They are:
- Changing of frequency
- Imposing of radio silence
- Breaking of radio silence
- Lifting of radio silence
- Closing down of a net
(2) When the two-words Nicknames is activated:
- First station is to authenticate
- All Stations are to readback the Nicknames so as to acknowledge and comply with the communication drills
- Lastly, the initiating Station will ack with the Nicknames followed by OUT to indicate the start of the communication drill
Example:
- HULLO all stations DELTA FOXTROT, this is A00, BLUE SPADE OVER.
- B19 wait… AUTHENTICATE Bravo Three OVER.
- A00 wait… I AUTHENTICATE Eight Three OVER.
- B19, roger BLUE SPADE OVER.
- C29, BLUE SPADE OVER.
- D39, BLUE SPADE OVER.
- A00, BLUE SPADE now, OUT.
When the authentication is wrong, the initiating station will reply WRONG OUT.
NOTE: Authentication is also used when:
- Joining a Working Net
- On a suspicious station
